Horizon of Khufu VR experience

The experience was styled as a Virtual exploration through a pyramid and several aspects of Egyptian culture.

We started by following a quirky Egyptologist called Mona. During this part there was a cat following us which was to revealed to be the god Bastet, who then accompanied us through the rest of the experience.

There were several parts where we went back into the past to look back at what the pyramids and Egypt in general was like during king Khufu's rule, as well as how his body was preserved after death through the process of embalming.

The modelling work wasn't super detailed, but was carried by the textures.

They were also efficient at deciding which areas needed more detail, as in the wider, more expansive landscape shots, objects that were further away were rendered in less detail and anything super far away was obscured by fog.

The experience had a system which displayed white silhouettes of other people around you to make sure no one bumped into each other.

You could also identify specifically who was in your party and see their name above their head. Their silhouette was coloured purple to distinguish them from everyone else.

Overall I'm glad I decided to come along to the experience, as it was a very cool use of VR technology and I was consistently interested and immersed in what was going on.

At the beginning it was a little bit disorienting, but as I went through I gradually became more comfortable with moving around and my anxiety of banging into things slowly went away.

My previous use of VR headsets definitely came in handy, and I imagine without it I would've found it way harder to navigate. Despite this though, this was the longest single session I have had in VR for a long time, and I was definitely starting to get a headache at the end.

I think in general, the experience was the perfect length for me, as any shorter it wouldn't have felt worth the price, and any longer it would definitely become a struggle/chore to keep going.
