Ideas for Degree Project
We have been asked to come up with 3 ideas before next week. These are the ideas I have been considering, all of which could involve VR:
- Showcasing designs for home interiors.
- Displaying the architecture/layout/structure of a house.
- A freerunning game exploring an urban environment.
The primary goal of these project ideas is to create an explorable/interactable space that provides an immersive experience for the user.
Though I will be designing the spaces for the purpose of this project, in a real life context, my goal would be to serve as a mediator between a designer and potential customer. The designer/architect/developer would present the idea and concept to me and then I would fully render it in a virtual space. I would then present it to a client and allow them to experience the space in VR, which would assist their purchase decision and give them a better idea of what they want.
For the first two ideas, I was inspired by some of the home designing/improvement programs I have been watching over the years with my Mum. A few of these programs even used VR to showcase designs to their clients before beginning the building process. A long time ago, my Mum took up interior design as a hobby, which makes me even more interested in the topic.
In my project I want to clearly distinguish between architecture and interior design. Upon searching for comparable attributes of each, this is what I found:

My main takeaway from this comparison is that Architecture concerns the general layout and structure of the building, as well as placement of elements such as doors and exterior windows. On the other hand, interior design is more related to furniture and dressings, alongside application/selection of elements such as curtains and wall art. However there is some overlap between the two which I was not expecting.
I think the third idea would make for a cool experience, however it does not really suit the direction I have been going in with my other projects. Since I don't have much knowledge about how games with freerunning and parkour mechanics work, this could make the process more difficult than it would be for the other two ideas. It also isn't the type of industry I am looking to go into.
