27th October

Today's session was focused on the process of creating a research question for our Dissertation.

I was late to the lecture due to Bus problems, but when I got there we were exploring the different types of research question. We were introduces to these question types:

  1. The 'Question' question
The most basic form of title. Open ended.

  2. The quotation question
A useful way of framing the title. Can serve as a springboard for discussion.

  3. The title question
The most ambition form of title. Shows confidence.
There were a couple of things we were told to be aware of when creating our question:
  • Make sure to balance aesthetics (creativity) with pragmatics (logic).
  • Beware of conjunctions such as 'and' or 'but'.
We were then shown a selection of research questions from previous years and had to narrow down which ones were best, commenting on ways they were good or could be better. This was a useful exercise for me, as it gave me good examples on which I can base my own question. Through assessing the strength and weaknesses of those questions, I also got a better idea of what I should avoid.

A portion at the end of the session was dedicated to asking questions. When I asked about how I could narrow down a question from the topic of VR, this is the summary of what he told me:
  • A lot is written about this topic. Research may broaden the scope before narrowing it down.
  • Could narrow it down by identifying particular uses of VR (Education? Museums? Entertainment?)
  • Find the most interesting aspects/uses to focus on.
  • Look into the writing of Jean Baudrillard and Umberto Eco.
