Week 1 of Level 5 Digital Media Design

Level 5 of Digital Media Design began this week, and have been shown the main projects of this Semester.
  • One is a group project where we have the option of creating a game, an animation or a short film.

  • The other is an independent project where we've been tasked to develop a prototype for an app and prepare a presentation where we show off our result in an interesting and engaging way.
Two different lecturers/tutors are directing each assignment. For the independent project, our tutor is Dean Stockton, and for the team project, we have Mikayla.

There is supposed to be a third lecturer who will be doing lectures on game creation and storytelling, but as of now they are still going through the HR approval process and haven't been officially assigned to us yet.

We've also been shown our major theory assignment by Dionysia, which consists of two parts.
  • An iMap equivalent to 1000 words.
  • A literature review with a maximum word count of 1500 words.
These are the topics we will be exploring throughout the semester:
  • Free culture
  • Immaterial futures
  • online politics and civic media (The Rise of the Cyber - proletariat?).
  • Medium specificity and the 'gesamtkunstwerk'
  • Algorithmic society
  • Technological determinism
Like last year we will have to choose only one of these topics to cover in our presentation. The first topic was Digital Economy, and we have already gone through it together in our Theory class, which was just yesterday as of me writing this blog post.

As of now, our main tasks are to get into our respective groups and start thinking about what kind of app we want to make.

My current app idea is to create my own version of a photo gallery app, as I can already think of several ideas of how I could make it more interesting than the boring grids that you see in the default phone gallery apps. One idea I've already thought of is giving the user an option to display their photos in a collage format.

Because we have 9 students in our class total, its pretty much decided that we'll be going into teams of three. At least some people are starting to group up, but I haven't quite figured out what group i'm going to be in. I'm interested in getting a group with Chris, but for the third person I'm not really sure yet.
