This session was another Installation Day. projector set-up. There were a few computers connected to three projectors, with 2 projectors all playing the same video. Our aim was to overlay each projection display together, to create a new image.
Firstly, we connected power cables to each projector and plugged them into one central hub. We then connected the projectors to the computers, using HDMI cables. However, some of the computers did not have HDMI slots. In order to fix this problem, we used widgets which had the HDMI port on one side but on the other it had an alternative port that could connect to a computer. We had to plug the drive, containing the video, into each individual computer and then transfer the files. The video consisted of bands of colour moving across the screen, at different speeds. The video also had sound, which was similar to radio sounds - you could hear people speaking, interesting, almost like a choir. However, we just played the audio from one of the computers, at maximum level and that seemed to work well enough. Because we wanted a continuous display, we set the videos to “loop”. Due to the videos on each computer starting at different times, this created an interesting result when they were displayed onto the projectors:
Lastly, we were shown several videos by our Tutor. One of them was about a new emerging screen technology. We were shown various installations, including this example in Seoul, Korea called “Wave”.
We were also shown a video about an artist called Bill Viola. An interview was shown where he described his thought processes when making videos, his history in making video art, and his obsession with the use of water in his videos. Following this, we were shown an example of his video piece called “Anthem”. This video was very much left to the individual to decide on the message, but overall it had a very haunting tone and feel to it. Whilst watching the video the message made enough sense, when we discussed the environmental issues, this made the message more clear.
