Learning to use the Equipment
We were introduced to audio recording equipment such as shotgun mics, boom mics and handheld recorders.
Most of the focus was put in the handheld recorders, which were given around for us to look at. This is the recorder I looked at in particular:
Testing out the Zoom mics
We were sent around the campus to test out the recording of different sounds. I paired up with Darshil and we spent a lot of the afternoon seeing what we could record around the Uni, which was pretty enjoyable. By the end of the day I already felt very confident with using the recorder.
Adobe Audition Piece
Recording footage
For my piece, I decided to record my bus Journey to University, as that would make for a pretty straight-forward narrative. This also made it convenient to film, as the main thing I needed to do was just take the recorder on the bus with me.
It took a couple of bus journeys for me to get the footage I needed, as on the first one, I forgot the Zoom recorder at home and had to use my phone recorder instead. The end product ended up including a bit of both recording sessions.
During these journeys, I tried to only record the important parts of my journey such as getting on and off, the sounds of the bus as it drives, walking sounds, etc.
I also managed to get some other sounds recorded, such as people chattering, birds chirping, and cars going by.
Learning Audition
To learn the basic features, we were given a collection of separate audio files, including a sample video that had a multitrack file with all the audio in it.
Some of the things we played around with included removing unwanted sounds, syncing audio to video, cropping out audio from the middle of clips, etc.
This gave us the skills we needed to edit together our own pieces.
Using Audition to edit/assemble piece
The first thing I did was to just put in the main audio clips in the order I generally wanted the narrative to go in.
The next was to clean up the audio, and make the clips flow better together, such as adding crossfades, and applying filters such as denoising and declicking.
This stage took the most time to complete, as it required the most adjustments and corrections to be made.
By the end of the process, this is what I had made:
BusJourney.wav
BusJourney.wav
Towards the end of the day, we were given feedback on our pieces. Following this, I went back to the piece and made some noticeable changes, such as adding more layers to the audio and making it slightly louder.
This was the result of my changes:
