Wordpress Session 1

Setting up Wordpress

We initially had a couple of issues getting started. This was because FileZilla wasn't pre-installed on the University computers like the tutors expected. This was later resolved by IT department.

We were also supposed to have a program called PuTTy, but that wasn't installed either. Since we didn't have the permissions to install programs directly, the tutor set it up on his laptop and used it to bring up a terminal, through which each of us set up our user profiles by inputting our username and password.

First part of the process involved installing the Wordpress files onto the PC. Even though we weren't able to directly install programs, we were at least able to put the files onto the downloads folder.

After we got access to FileZilla, we had to create a session that would give us access to the university network and transfer the wordpress files onto it. The reason for this was because we were trying to create a profile that was hosted by the University rather than Wordpress themselves.

FileZilla ended up being out main tool during the setup process. This was because the University didn't allow programs to be directly installed onto the PC and FileZilla was the only program that could really do it.

There was a few other small steps we needed to take, such as adjusting the config files in the notepad app to make it function properly on the University network. After that though, the rest of the setup was moved to being done online.

We began this by copy and pasting this link into the top bar of our browser:
http://ca-net.herts.ac.uk/~xx20xxx/wordpress/wp-admin/

The part of the link with "xx20xxx" in it, we replaced with our email usernames, which led us to a sign-in page. Among the details we needed was our regular uni details, as well as a mySQL password, which had been randomly generated in the Wordpress directory.

After getting we had successfully logged in, the rest of the process involved adding themes, plugins, etc.

To install these, we basically had to download the zipped files onto the downloads folder, unzipping them, and moving the contents into their respective folders in the Wordpress directory.

During this session, we were able to at least set up the homepage. The screenshot below shows what it looks like:
