Colour Grading Week 2

Today we focused on more colour grading/editing. The main Premiere tabs we used were Lumetri Scopes and Lumetri Colour.

Within the lumetri scopes tab, there were several sections we could either enable or disable; Vectorscope HLS, Vectorscope YUV,  Histogram, Parade and the Waveform.

The Lumetri Colour tab also had several different subsections; 'Basic Correction', 'Creative', 'Curves', 'Color Wheels & Match', 'HSL Secondary' and 'Vignette'. During today's session we mostly focused on the first few sections.

Our first major exercise was to darken an over exposed video of a train track from above. We were led through the process by the tutor, who basically showed us how the tabs operated and how changing the sliders affected the image, as well as how these changes affected the look of the different Lumetri Scope displays.

After we had successfully corrected the footage, the one thing we still needed to get right was the sky, as it was the only thing that was still over-exposed. To fix this, we needed to key out the sky and replace it with a different sky that would actually have some detail.

To keep the key within the correct area of the video, we needed to draw a mask around the sky. We had to use a couple of masks to completely encapsulate the sky.

Our next exercise was to transform footage of different coloured inks being dispensed into a tank of water into an interesting video piece. A lot of the process involved cutting up the video and overlaying different parts upon each other.

The main issue I was having was that, due to the video being in slow motion, there was too much dead space for my liking, where not much interesting things were happening. This took a lot of experimentation with the arrangements of the clips for me to correct, and I was eventually able to come up with a result I was happy with.
