After Effects [Session 2]

Today we did several different small exercises.

The main exercise focused on adding several different elements to the Planetary System video we created last week.

The first few parts we added to the video were a heatwave effect around the sun element, and a video of a dancing astronaut, which we animated floating across the screen. We also added a wobble effect to the "Are We Alone?" text to make it look like its being affected by the sun's heat.

The next major part of the exercise was to create the scene of a TV and contain our planet system video within the TVs screen. This required to mask out the area of the screen to give us space to insert our footage. We also added a custom background behind the main scene of the TV.

To make map the video to conform to the shape of the TV screen and make it look believable, we used the corner pin effect to attach the corners of the Planet system video to the corners of the screen, thus properly matching the perspective of the scene.

To further create an authentic TV screen look, we added a video clip of TV static. We also found a video clip of a turned off TV, from which we extracted the screen and placed on top of our TV screen, blending it in with the video to create a subtle reflection effect.

This was my final result:

Our next exercise was based around text, and involved us re-creating this short animation:

Out of the exercises we did today, this one, I had the most difficulty following. Part of this was due to the fact that the instructions in the PowerPoint didn't cover all the steps I needed,

which left only the the tutor's walkthrough of each step to rely upon. This meant that when I got stuck, I didn't have anything to fall back upon. Because of this, I ended up falling substantially behind.

In order to catch up, I had to spend some of the lunch break using images in the PowerPoint to figure out the steps I had gotten stuck on previously.

This is what I was able to make:

The next and final exercise of the day involved learning how about the Value and Speed Graphs and how to use them to animate. We initially tested this out on our text animation, but instead moved to a new document and set up a rough version of the same bouncing ball exercise we had done last semester.

Overall I found this process much more difficult than using the regular method. It didn't take me long to figure out how adjusting the curves affected the object, but I still found found it quite challenging to produce the results I wanted.
